Acne Solutions

Acne (Medically known as Acne Vulgaris) is a common human skin disease. It affects mainly the skin with the densest populations of sebaceous follicles; these areas include the face, upper part of the chest and the back. This usually starts in puberty when the hormones (known as androgens) increase the size and oil production in the glands. Acne can also occur in adults, mainly women, through such things as hormone fluctuations (pregnancy, overproduction of androgens (male hormones) etc.), diet, stress and cosmetics.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

IPL works by using Selective Photothermolysis, photo meaning light, thermo meaning heat and lysis meaning destruction. This occurs when the light is absorbed by the bacteria that causes acne, Propionibacterium Acnes (otherwise known as the P.Acnes Bacteria). The light converts into heat which damages the targeted cells but leaving the surrounded skin undamaged.

What results can be achieved?

Everyone’s skin is different but you can usually expect the IPL to help keep the breakouts at bay, clear the skin and even out the skin tone.

How many treatments will I need?

While ever the acne bacteria is present in the skin you will need to continue with the treatments. This is why we have kept the price lower than IPL Skin rejuvenation as every client is different and may end up needing to continue with the treatment until the bacteria has cleared.

What will happen during my treatment?

When you have your treatment it will begin with us cleansing your skin to ensure it is free from makeup, dirt and sunscreen/moisturiser. We will give you specially designed goggles to wear during the treatment, these goggles are made specifically for the wavelengths of light used with IPL. A cooling conductive gel will be applied to your skin. The application of light is made by using a sapphire crystal in a handpiece. The light will be a short bright flash and will create a sensation that many people describe as a flicking of an elastic band. Your therapist will ask you throughout the treatment if you are comfortable. The gel will be removed and we will apply sunscreen to your skin.

What will happen after my treatments?

Following your appointment you may experience warmth and tightening as the collagen is being produced. This generally lasts the afternoon.

Is IPL right for me?

IPL is a very successful treatment and when performed by qualified and experienced technicians like the staff at O’Hara Skin & Body Clinic, it is a safe procedure. We use state of the art equipment, have received qualifications from Australasian Academy of Dermal Science and we always perform in depth consultations before commencing any treatment. There are restrictions on who can receive IPL treatment. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are not suitable for IPL and many medications may be contraindicated. Photosensitizing medications create a risk of burns (especially acne medications such as Roaccutane). It is important to be honest with us when filling out consultation forms so we can perform safe and effective treatments. Dark skin colours may be difficult to treat so your therapist may recommend an alternative treatment if IPL is not the most appropriate treatment for you.

Is there any specific preparation or aftercare?

It is very important to follow the correct home care routine that your therapist has recommended to you. This will include active ingredients such as retinol and vitamin c’s to not only enhance your treatment results but also prevent future damage. It is essential to wear an SPF+ 30 sunscreen on a daily basis. Do not exercise for 24hrs post treatment

LED Light Therapy

LED Technology offers a non-chemical, non-invasive alternative treatment to a number of skin conditions including Acne. LED light therapy (Light Emitting Diode Technology) is a therapy that utilizes the therapeutic effects of light to heal skin conditions. LED is used for light therapy as it emits a low-level power light ray that stimulates skin cells but is not harmful or irritating to the skin and will not cause cancer. LED light therapy is used to treat acne and blemishes as well as other skin condition such as psoriasis, eczema, pigmentation and fine lines and wrinkles. LED light therapy is suitable for all skin types and skin colour.

Acne on the face and neck, décolletage and back can be treated with LED light therapy. LED light therapy is a safe and painless procedure and there is no risk of burning or damaging the skin. After using this therapy, the skin texture appears smoother, skin appears brighter and there is no down time or peeling, as can happen in some laser treatments for acne problems. Results can be seen immediately or after a series of sessions, depending on your skin tone, lifestyle and age.
